President Trump is considering activating a little-known panel that could enable exemptions from the Endangered Species Act.

In recent executive orders, President Trump has indicated his intent to convene the Endangered Species Committee, commonly known as the "God Squad." This unique panel, comprised of high-level officials, possesses the power to override crucial components of the Endangered Species Act, potentially allowing development projects to proceed even if they threaten endangered species. Originally established in the late 1970s, the God Squad's authority was intended to balance environmental protections with economic interests, but it has rarely been utilized. Legal experts caution that while the president may seek to use this authority, there are stringent procedures that must be followed before any exemptions can be granted.

The God Squad is chaired by the interior secretary and includes various cabinet members, such as the secretaries of agriculture, the Army, and the heads of the Environmental Protection Agency, among others. For a project to disseminate, it must garner five favorable votes out of seven. The group has adjudicated only three cases since its inception, granting exemptions twice and denying one.

Though the concept of the God Squad raises significant concerns among environmentalists, the panel remains a little-known facet of federal law that reflects the ongoing battle between development and conservation in the United States. If Trump succeeds in his efforts, it may set a precedent for future administrations regarding environmental policy and endangered species protections.
