US Grammy-winning artist Ciara is making headlines after being granted citizenship of Benin under the recently established law designed for descendants of slaves. Expressing her gratitude, Ciara thanked Benin for welcoming her with open arms and a warm heart through an Instagram post.

The citizenship initiative is part of Benin's broader efforts to strengthen connections with the African diaspora and enhance cultural tourism. Ciara is known for her popular R&B and pop tracks, including "Goodies" and "1,2 Step." The official citizenship ceremony took place in Cotonou, where the government described the act as "symbolic, humane and historic," emphasizing its significance as a heartfelt return to one’s ancestral roots.

By implementing the My Afro Origins Law last year, Benin follows in the footsteps of nations like Ghana and Guinea-Bissau, which also grant citizenship to those with African ancestors affected by the transatlantic slave trade. Descendants can now apply online for citizenship as part of this newly launched initiative.

Recently, Benin appointed famed filmmaker Spike Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, as ambassadors for African-Americans, further underscoring the country's commitment to engaging with its diaspora. Historically, Benin’s coastline was known as the Slave Coast, with the Kingdom of Whydah exporting over one million Africans to the Americas during the years between 1580 and 1727.
