ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Constellation Energy has announced plans to invest over $340 million to enhance water quality at the Conowingo Dam in Maryland, which discharges into the Susquehanna River and ultimately flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The effort aims to improve the quality of the water in the largest tributary to the Chesapeake Bay while securing the continued operation of the dam's hydroelectric facility, a major source of renewable energy for the state. Maryland Governor Wes Moore commended the agreement, highlighting its role in tackling pollution at the dam and ensuring clean energy production for the state. The investment follows a contentious legal history regarding pollution responsibilities, with state environmental challenges leading to a prior $230 million investment requirement for the dam's operators. Key elements of the current agreement include $88 million dedicated to pollution reduction projects, cash for debris removal and invasive species management, and the establishment of a mussel hatchery to improve local aquatic ecosystems. The commitment culminates years of advocacy for the dam’s re-licensing with stringent environmental protections.
