Ex‑Venezuelan President Maduro Charged in U.S. with Torture Conspiracy
Prosecutors in the United States have opened a fresh case accusing former Venezuelan head of state Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores of conspiracy to commit torture against U.S. citizens held in their former administration. These new allegations join earlier accusations of drug trafficking and weapons violations, all of which the couple has denied. Both are currently imprisoned in a Brooklyn detention facility after U.S. forces executed a pre‑dawn raid on their Caracas compound early this year. Human rights advocates say the Venezuelan regime has a pattern of systematic torture, and the latest charges specifically target alleged abuses of U.S. nationals. The trial is slated to begin in June 2027.
