In brief

Michel, a widowed Belgian man, traveled 760km to meet Sophie Vouzelaud believing they were to marry. Instead, he found her husband and realized he had been scammed out of €30,000. His experience highlights the dangers of online romance fraud, which often preys on vulnerable individuals.

A Belgian man named Michel, 76, undertook a long journey of 760 km (472 miles) to meet a French beauty queen, Sophie Vouzelaud, convinced they were engaged to be married. Unfortunately, his romantic fantasy turned into a harsh reality when he encountered not the beauty queen, but her husband, Fabien, upon his arrival at their home in France. Having spent weeks communicating on WhatsApp, Michel was led to believe he was in a genuine relationship with Vouzelaud, who was the first runner-up in Miss France 2007. In a video shared by Fabien, Michel admitted, “I am an imbecile,” after realizing he had fallen victim to a romance scam, having transferred €30,000 (approximately $35,000) to the fraudsters posing as the beauty queen. When Michel approached the couple with declarations of his supposed future together with Vouzelaud, he was met with Fabien's pointed response, “Well, I'm the current one.” Sophie Vouzelaud then attempted to explain the deception while urging Michel to report the incident to the authorities. It remains unclear whether he followed her advice.Romance fraud is a growing concern, especially targeting seniors, as scammers exploit their loneliness and longing for companionship. According to Action Fraud, signs of such scams include secrecy around a partner’s identity and the transfer of money to someone not met in person. Tips for protection against romance scams include skepticism toward requests for funds from unfamiliar online connections, consulting trusted friends or family, and conducting thorough research on profile images that may be fraudulent. Victims of these scams require support; it’s essential to be empathetic and maintain an understanding of the emotional toll of such experiences.
