Fire Destroys Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest; Man Arrested

Police in Bavaria detained a 33‑year‑old German after a blaze broke out at the Kehlsteinhaus, the mountaintop retreat once used by Adolf Hitler.

The alarm was raised at 21:15 local time on Friday, and firefighters found the 1,800‑metre high building engulfed in flames. About 200 emergency personnel were dispatched, but the rugged terrain hampered efforts to control the fire.

The suspect was captured on a motorcycle near the scene, and a criminal investigation has been launched. Prosecutor Rainer Vietze said the man may have had a mental disorder and that a possible political motive was being considered.

The Kehlsteinhaus, completed by the Nazis in 1938, has survived the war and is now a tourist attraction, but it remains a contentious site symbolising the excesses of the Nazi regime.

Officials in Bavaria said the site would not be left as a ruin and that remembrance work must continue, while critics worry the memorial could become a pilgrimage for neo‑Nazis.

The blaze has sparked renewed debate over the fate of buildings tied to Hitler, with proposals ranging from preservation to demolition.
