The two other detainees are the adult children of Emile's grandparents, who face charges of voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse, according to prosecutors. Emile’s lawyer, Isabelle Colombani, declined to comment on the situation, indicating she had only just been informed of the recent arrests.

Last year, remains believed to be Emile's, along with articles of his clothing, were discovered by a hiker close to the home of his maternal grandparents. Despite the recovery of these items, authorities stated that the investigation could not determine the exact cause of death, raising possibilities that ranged from an accident to foul play.

The case, which had seemed to stall, captured significant media attention in France, particularly during the initial search when journalists outnumbered locals in the small Alpine village of Haut-Vernet. Emile was last seen on July 8, 2023, walking alone on a street in the village. Following his disappearance, a massive search effort ensued involving police, military personnel, and volunteers.

Even as interest in the investigation waned, the discovery of the remains prompted a renewed focus on Emile's grandfather as potential suspect. Despite this, his attorney expressed hope that authorities would pursue all investigative leads equally.

Emile’s funeral took place in February, with his family expressing the profound pain of uncertainty about their loss. They have repeatedly called for answers over the past 19 months. Following the recent arrests, Aix-en-Provence chief prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon noted that the arrests were the result of ongoing investigations and reported that searches were being conducted in the area surrounding the grandparents’ home. Notably, the confiscation of one of their vehicles has also been reported.

While individuals can be arrested for questioning during an investigation in France, it is important to note that such an arrest does not guarantee formal legal actions will follow. The investigation into Emile's tragic case continues as authorities seek resolution.
