Suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates in relation to alleged serious organised crime offences. Kinahan, aged in his 40s, was arrested in Dubai under a warrant issued by the Irish courts, according to reports from Irish national broadcaster RTÉ.
The US government imposed sanctions on him in April 2022 after he and his family were identified as leaders of the Kinahan organized crime cartel. Kinahan also had connections to the world of sport through his former boxing management company, MTK Global, which represented over 100 boxers, including renowned fighters like Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.
An Garda Síochána (Irish police) acknowledged awareness of the arrest of an Irish national. Dubai police confirmed that Kinahan was taken into custody on Wednesday, April 15, following extensive search and surveillance operations aimed at apprehending him for alleged participation in an international organized crime network.
The arrest is part of a broader initiative to combat cross-border crime and followed the submission of a detailed judicial file from Irish authorities concerning Kinahan's alleged criminal activities as part of a larger criminal organization.
Following the information provided, Dubai Public Prosecution issued a relevant arrest warrant which led to the initiation of legal processes for Kinahan's extradition. He was apprehended within 48 hours of the warrant's issue.
Gardaí noted that the arrest aligns with the bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE, emphasizing the role of international cooperation in tackling organized crime. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister Jim O'Callaghan expressed their support for the arrest, acknowledging the effective operation of the extradition agreement and the collaborative efforts involved.
Kinahan has a notorious history, having been named in the Dublin High Court as a head of a drug cartel. An assassination attempt on his life took place in February 2016 during the infamous Regency Hotel shooting, which resulted in multiple casualties and increased tensions between rival gangs. Following this event, Kinahan reportedly relocated to Dubai from Spain, where he had spent considerable time.
