Police have arrested a man in Melbourne after a car mounted a kerb and crashed into pedestrians, killing one.
A grey Toyota struck two pedestrians on Langs Road in the Ascot Vale suburb just before 17:00 local time on Saturday, according to Victoria Police.
One pedestrian died at the scene, while the second was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities stated that the circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation. The arrested man is scheduled for questioning.
Local reports indicate that the crash occurred outside the Melbourne Showgrounds, which was hosting the two-day Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event.
Images from the scene show a police cordon surrounding the damaged vehicle.
Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy elaborated that the driver was apprehended by an off-duty officer with assistance from the public.
McEvoy mentioned that it remains uncertain whether the incident was intentional, but authorities will explore all possibilities, including the involvement of drugs or alcohol.
An eyewitness recounted hearing a loud screech as the vehicle mounted the kerb at high speed, striking multiple individuals.
The incident unfolded before what was expected to be a large turnout at the pop culture event featuring notable guests such as Andy Serkis and Bonnie Wright.
