Federal Judge Jesse Furman has ordered the Trump administration to reverse the illegal termination of Maurene Comey, the former federal prosecutor and daughter of former FBI director James Comey.

Comey was dismissed in July 2025, with the Justice Department alleging job‑related reasons. She sued, arguing the dismissal stemmed from her father's criticism of President Donald Trump and her perceived political affiliations. The court found the decision violated constitutional rights and federal employment law.

Judge Furman ruled that the attorney general may fire prosecutors only for specific, lawful reasons and with proper due process, none of which applied to Comey's case. He ordered her reinstatement to her former position and back pay covering the period from July until December 2025 when she accepted another job.

Comey’s legal team celebrated the ruling as a victory for civil servants and the rule of law. The Justice Department has said it will appeal the decision. The case follows earlier charges against James Comey, the former FBI head, who was embroiled in controversies over allegations of political bias and a contentious Instagram post purportedly hinting at violence against Trump.

Comey’s career includes high‑profile cases such as the investigations into Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and hip‑hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Her firing highlights the contentious intersection of politics and federal law enforcement during the Trump era.
