Australian PM Apologizes for 'Inappropriate' Comments About Kylie Minogue

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued an unequivocal apology after remarks were made on the Bush Deep podcast about pop star Kylie Minogue, saying “Oh, Kylie, clearly.” The comments, made during a 20‑minute interview with comedian Nikki Osborne, sparked a wave of criticism from MPs and the public, with some calling the remarks sexist and disrespectful.

During the interview, Osborne asked Albanese to place three celebrity names—Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Rhonda Burchmore—in a ‘shag, marry or date’ scenario. Albanese initially tried to avoid the question, saying, “I’ve just got married, I’m only six months in.” He then added, “Oh, Kylie, clearly,” before being prompted further. The “shag, marry or date” question was met with swift backlash on social media and from MPs.

MP Zali Steggall called the remarks “entirely inappropriate” and urged Albanese to “lead by example” in confronting sexism. Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson noted on X that the comments were “disrespectful to women, embarrassing to Australians and demean the office of Prime Minister.” Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles, who has been at the helm during Albanese’s Pacific tour, emphasized that the government remains committed to elevating women in society.

In a succinct statement on Monday, Albanese said: “I apologise unequivocally for the comments.” The apology was issued shortly after the interview was aired, with Albanese stressing that the remarks were a “mistake” and not reflective of his views on gender equality.

Despite the incident, Albanese defended the broader achievements of his administration, noting that his cabinet has achieved unprecedented gender parity. He also addressed lighter moments from the podcast, recounting a story about a gift of melons from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which was humorously compared to a celebrity look‑alike by Osborne.
