Vietnam has eliminated the special consumption tax on all gasoline types, setting the rate at 0% through March 31 2027, Xinhua reported on Sunday, November 30, 2026. The decision comes under a new government resolution issued the day before, replacing the previous 10% rate on regular gasoline and 8% and 7% rates on E5 and E10 biofuels.
Prior to this change, the tax had been suspended to zero from late March to June 2026 to aid the domestic market. Special consumption tax is thus restored to zero, while the environmental protection tax on gasoline and oil products remains at zero Vietnamese dong per liter. Vehicles and oil products are also exempt from value‑added tax declaration and payment under a policy extended through the end of 2026.
The announcement was first covered by local daily VnExpress and corroborated by Xinhua. No other source has reported this tax adjustment, making Xinhua the sole outlet to confirm the policy shift.
Industry analysts anticipate that the zero‑tax period will lower fuel costs and stimulate consumer spending, potentially boosting economic activity in the domestic market. The government maintains that the measure will support environmental protection and fiscal stability while it implements broader economic reforms.
