In brief

At the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan urged Russia and Ukraine to accept significant sacrifices for a lasting peace, warning that the war’s economic fallout and events like the Strait of Hormuz closure threaten wider conflict. He highlighted the damage to global trade, the disruption of Black Sea grain shipping, and the need for improved relations between Russia and Europe as conditions for a credible settlement.

On Saturday, at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan called for Russia and Ukraine to make “significant sacrifices” to secure a peace agreement, warning that the five‑year war has inflicted extensive economic damage and could spark a wider regional crisis.

Fidan noted that the conflict’s costs were increasingly felt across Europe, where the war’s disruption of energy supplies and international trade had strained manufacturing and export sectors. He emphasized that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz had compounded these pressures by tightening global energy flows.

He stressed that a lasting settlement would need not only peace between Russia and Ukraine but also a redefined, constructive relationship with Europe, as any accord would impact more than the two belligerents.

Fidan also spoke about the Black Sea grain trade, expressing concern over disrupted shipping routes that hamper food security. He said Turkey was making intensive diplomatic contacts to restore the flow of grain and energy supplies.

In an interview with Anadolu and the Turkish public broadcaster TRT, he said, "These wars are no longer sustainable. Therefore, Russia and Ukraine must reach an agreement that entails significant sacrifices."

TRT World reported that Fidan had outlined practical proposals to address global crises and to strengthen international cooperation at the summit, a detail not covered by other outlets covering the same event.
