In brief

At the World Investment Forum in Doha, UNCTAD director Luz Maria de la Mora said Latin American countries should not have to choose between the United States and China for export markets and inputs. She called for a diversification of trade and investment relations, noting that China remains the leading partner for many South American nations while the U.S. dominates trade with Mexico and several Central American and Caribbean economies. UNCTAD announced 20 investment actions at the Forum to support this strategy, a statement reported by Novuum.

UNCTAD director Luz Maria de la Mora told Bloomberg at the World Investment Forum in Doha that Latin America need not choose between the United States and China as it reorganizes global trade. De la Mora, director of UNCTAD’s Division on International Trade and Commodities, said both economies are vital export destinations and sources of goods for the region.

She urged the region to diversify its trade and investment relations, to identify competitive advantages, and to strengthen participation in global supply chains. De la Mora stressed a practical, market‑driven approach to leveraging the opportunities presented by both powers.

De la Mora pointed out that China is the leading trading partner for several South American nations, while the United States holds that position for Mexico and several Central American and Caribbean economies.

The UNCTAD statement was accompanied by a declaration that the Doha Forum agreed on 20 investment actions aimed at supporting Latin American diversification, a claim reported by Novuum.
