On Nov. 5, President Donald Trump signed a federal document declaring the White House’s Oval Office and Cabinet Room a national monument, according to Reuters. The move follows Trump’s refurbishment of the Oval Office with gold accents, statues of famous Americans, portraits relocated from storage, and a copy of the Declaration of Independence that now hangs on the wall.
When asked whether future changes could be made, Trump replied:
No major modification without the approval of Congress. So if they want to say ‘let’s not have Oval anymore, let’s make it square’, what happens is they have to go back to Congress, and hopefully the Congress… will be smart enough not to let that happen. This statement underscores the president’s intention to preserve the current design of the Oval Office.
