The Swedish Parliament rejected Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist as the country’s new prime minister on Tuesday, a decision that signals a setback for the party and reshapes the balance of power in Sweden’s coalition government, Xinhua reported.
The vote, held in Stockholm, ended with an unexpected majority against Ringqvist, the party’s top official, further complicating the negotiations between the governing parties.
The result marks a notable shift in Stockholm’s political landscape, as the Centre Party had been expected to secure the leadership role amid negotiations following the resignation of the previous prime minister.
According to Xinhua, the rejection undermines the party’s standing and could lead to a recalibration of the coalition’s composition.
With the Centre Party excluded from the premiership, coalition partners have moved to adjust the parliamentary distribution of offices, illustrating the fragile nature of Sweden’s multi-party arrangement.
