In brief
The KOSPI fell 51 points to 5,679.74 after Intel and Amazon posted disappointing earnings, echoing declines on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. Major Korean stocks such as Samsung and SK Hynix also fell, while the won slipped modestly against the dollar.
On Monday, Seoul’s KOSPI opened 0.89 percent lower, dropping 51 points to 5,679.74 as of 9:15 a.m., according to Yonhap. The fall followed disappointing quarterly earnings from U.S. tech giants Intel and Amazon, which heightened investor worries over the sustainability of AI investments.
The decline mirrored downturns on U.S. exchanges: the S&P 500 slipped 1.82 percent and the tech‑heavy Nasdaq fell 2.86 percent, reflecting the global impact of the earnings reports.
Key Korean listings joined the sell‑off. Samsung Electronics fell 2.89 percent, SK Hynix slid 0.63 percent, LG Energy Solution declined 0.76 percent, Hyundai Motor eased 0.18 percent, and KB Financial dropped 2.77 percent.
The Korean won weakened slightly, trading at 1,335.2 won per U.S. dollar—down 0.9 won from the previous session’s close.
Analysts noted that the AI‑spending boom had been predominantly financed by the earnings of U.S. tech leaders, and the recent results raise doubts about its sustainability, shaping market sentiment across Asia.
