In brief
Confidence Musariri, Acting Manager for Editorial and Operations at Namibia Press Agency, announced the agency’s use of AI to cut production costs, speed delivery and widen audience reach. He urged Global South media to share content directly and leverage social media to counter stereotypes. Musariri plans to secure hands‑on AI skills exchanges at the upcoming World Media Summit in Beijing.
Before the World Media Summit in Beijing, Confidence Musariri, Acting Manager for Editorial and Operations at the Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), told Xinhua that his agency is already harnessing artificial intelligence to cut production costs, speed news delivery, and expand its audience reach.
Musariri said the AI tools at NAMPA help streamline editing, automate fact‑checking and generate tailored content for diverse platforms. He expects to use the summit to broker cooperation agreements and to learn about next‑generation AI solutions that could further boost regional newsrooms.
He warned that Global South media must unite to dismantle persistent stereotypes—especially those that paint Africa as a monolithic “one Africa” when, in fact, each country is sovereign and unique. The executive stressed that such clichés harm investment and national images.
Musariri called for direct content exchange among Global South agencies, instead of relying on Western gatekeepers for verification. He said “There is a need for us now to also boost the cooperative news exchange agencies. There has to be exchanges within the agencies within the Global South for us to share the content directly with one another,” he added.
In a separate remark, he highlighted the growing influence of social media:
Confidence Musariri
I believe we must adopt the usage of social media where every content creator tells the story the way they see it. It is outside the boundaries of conventional media now. I think social media is playing a bigger role in demystifying the stereotypes and false narratives.
Musariri plans to use the summit to negotiate hands‑on skills exchanges and to embed AI more deeply in newsroom workflows. He hopes the event will accelerate cooperation among Global South outlets, helping them compete on a level playing field with Western services.
