In brief
Hundreds of civilians are taking shelter at a Russian air base in Syria, as unrest intensifies amid violent clashes and government crackdowns resulting in over 1,300 casualties.
In the wake of severe violence in Syria's coastal region, hundreds of civilians have sought refuge at the Russian air base Hmeimim, located near the city of Jableh. Satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies, reviewed by The Times, shows crowds and vehicles gathered on the base’s compound and at Latakia International Airport, where many have fled seeking safety from the escalating conflict.Recent footage captures a large group outside the base brandishing placards and chanting for “international protection.” Additional satellite images displayed a significant number of cars recently parked within the air base, while videos showed families receiving aid from military personnel. Reports indicate that more than a dozen military tents have been erected within the airport grounds.Violence erupted last week, pitting fighters loyal to the newly established government led by Ahmed al-Shara against remnants of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 1,300 fatalities, the majority being civilians. Activists claim that approximately 1,000 of the deceased were killed by government-aligned forces amid the unrest, particularly in Latakia and Tartus Provinces. These troubling developments underscore the urgent need for international attention and humanitarian assistance in the region.
