In brief

Zhenhao Zou, previously convicted of raping multiple women, faces new accusations as 23 more women come forward with allegations of sexual assault. Police are attempting to track down additional victims as investigations reveal a potential pattern of abuse.

A new wave of allegations has emerged against Zhenhao Zou, a Chinese PhD student recently convicted in London for drugging and raping 10 women. In the wake of his trial, 23 additional women have stepped forward with their accounts, increasing concerns that his criminal behavior spans across a much larger group of victims.Zou was sentenced last month, and police revealed they possess video evidence hinting at as many as 50 other possible victims. Authorities are actively working to identify these women. Two of the new complainants shared their harrowing experiences with the BBC World Service. One woman reported being raped by Zou in China after he incapacitated her with a drug-laced drink, leaving her unable to speak. Another victim recounted waking up in Zou's London apartment to find him filming himself assaulting her.In interviews, the women expressed remorse for not speaking up sooner, believing that earlier reports could have prevented further assaults. The trial has served as a catalyst for several victims, including a woman known as Alice, who detailed a night out in London where she was targeted by Zou, ultimately leading her to report the incident after the trial concluded.Other victims have faced significant challenges in reporting the assaults, particularly those who are international students unfamiliar with the UK legal system. Sarah Yeh, a trustee of the Southeast and East Asian Women's Association, explained that victims often struggle with the implications of coming forward, which can include fear of repercussions on their academic lives and family reputation.Additionally, another complainant named Rachel has shared her story of being drugged and raped by Zou in his hometown. She conveyed her struggles with the idea of seeking justice, fearing she would not be able to prove non-consent.As police investigate these new claims, they assert that Zou's network of victims may be even larger than previously acknowledged. Commander Kevin Southworth from the Metropolitan Police confirmed ongoing inquiries into the newly reported cases.Emphasizing the importance of sharing their stories, victims like Rachel and Alice express hope that their testimonials will encourage others to come forward, highlighting the need for support systems for those affected by sexual violence. The case continues to unfold as law enforcement remains committed to identifying and assisting all potential victims.
