Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has been shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities have reported.

Police received reports of the shooting in the Frankivsk district of Lviv, western Ukraine, at around midday local time on Saturday. It is unclear if the perpetrator has been arrested.

Parubiy, 54, rose to prominence as part of Ukraine's Maidan movement, which advocated for closer ties with the European Union (EU) and played a significant role in ousting pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as a terrible murder and extended his condolences.

Details surrounding the attack are still unclear, with initial reports suggesting that Parubiy was shot multiple times by a gunman on an e-bike, dressed as a courier. The Ukrainian National Police, Lviv Regional Police, and the security service are all investigating the killing.

In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky mentioned that the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, and Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, reported on what they called Parubiy's terrible murder. Zelensky emphasized that all necessary forces and means are being deployed to investigate and find the killer.
