Serhii K was apprehended in Rimini by Italy's carabinieri and is alleged to be a mastermind behind the operation that targeted the pipelines. He reportedly chartered a yacht and sailed from Germany to the Baltic Sea, near the Danish island of Bornholm, where the explosions took place on September 26, 2022. Although the Nord Stream 2 line never became operational, Nord Stream 1 has historically been a significant energy conduit from Russia to Germany.

Prior to the war, approval for Nord Stream 2 was halted by Germany, leaving Nord Stream 1 as a critical supply link. The German prosecutor’s office, which had issued an arrest warrant for another suspect involved, said Serhii K will face an investigating judge as he is extradited from Italy. No definitive evidence has established links between any state, including Ukraine or Russia, and the attacks, amidst ongoing international speculations regarding the incident.

Germany has previously suggested that Ukrainian operatives carried out the sabotage, while Russian officials have pointed fingers at the U.S. and the U.K. as potential orchestrators behind the blasts, leaving the real culprits shrouded in mystery.

The inquiry continues as tensions escalate in the region, with energy security at the forefront of Europe’s challenges.
