A fire broke out Friday night at a shoe factory in Delhi’s Mangolpuri industrial area, killing four people and wounding two, police said Saturday. The incident left the factory closed and prompted an emergency response from local authorities.

An Xinhua report cites a police official who said: “Six people were rescued from inside the factory in an unconscious condition and rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri. Four were declared dead at the hospital, while the other two are undergoing treatment.”

Fire officials’ preliminary investigation noted that the blaze began in the basement of the footwear‑manufacturing unit. Heavy smoke then spread through the building, trapping workers on the upper floors.

Police have ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, the official said, and are reviewing safety protocols at the site.
