In brief

Jens-Frederik Nielsen stresses Greenland's autonomy and importance of respect in US relations

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has strongly asserted that the island is not a "piece of property that can be bought," in light of Donald Trump's recurring suggestions that the United States should control the autonomous Danish territory. During his visit to Copenhagen on Sunday, Nielsen emphasized the need for Greenland and Denmark to present a united front against what he termed "disrespectful" rhetoric from the US. He spoke in tandem with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during a visit that symbolizes unity."We will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by anyone," declared Nielsen, who assumed office in April. Highlighting the necessity for a closer relationship between Greenland and Denmark, he noted that this is especially important given the evolving foreign policy landscape. Trump’s remarks about acquiring Greenland have caused considerable backlash in both Denmark and Greenland, and he has previously mentioned military force as a potential means to assert control.Despite their criticisms of Trump’s comments, both Nielsen and Frederiksen expressed openness to dialogue with the US president. Nielsen stated that Greenland is eager to strengthen ties with the US, aiming for development while demanding mutual respect. Nielsen's engagement in Denmark follows Frederiksen's recent trip to Greenland, which included a reminder to Trump that "you can't annex other countries."The US has long had a vested interest in Greenland, including a military base established during World War Two, along with strategic interests in the island's rare earth minerals. Despite voices advocating for full independence from Denmark, polls indicate that most Greenlanders do not wish to become part of the United States. The coalition government, created in March and led by Nielsen's center-right Democrats, supports a gradual path towards independence while maintaining a diplomatic stance toward the US and Denmark.
