At least eight Palestinians, including police officers and a child, were killed in two Israeli airstrikes on Gaza on Sunday, according to Xinhua and Al Jazeera reports.
Xinhua said an Israeli drone fired a missile at a group of Palestinians and police personnel in the al‑Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, killing five people and wounding several others, according to the Nasser Medical Complex. The Hamas‑run interior authorities confirmed that five members of the General Directorate of Police were killed while "performing routine duties" in al‑Mawasi. Xinhua also reported a separate strike that killed three Palestinians, including a child, and wounded six others in the al‑Rimal neighbourhood, west of Gaza City.
Al Jazeera corroborated the death toll, noting that Israeli drone attacks on the same day killed five people in al‑Mawasi and three in the Rimal area, and that a four‑year‑old boy was among the deceased. The outlet added that the Taj Mall was also targeted in the northern Gaza strike.
Gaza’s Ministry of Interior stated the police were targeted as they performed their duties.
Hani Mahmoud, reporting for Al Jazeera from Gaza City, said the police "were targeted as they were doing their jobs."

Israel’s army told AFP that the strike pursued a "terrorist" in southern Gaza, while Hamas condemned the attacks as a "deliberate war crime" and slammed the bombardment of Gaza City for killing civilians, including the child.
Xinhua noted that Israeli attacks have killed 75 police officers since the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect in October 2025. Gaza health authorities reported 1,580 Palestinians killed and 5,711 wounded in the enclave since the ceasefire, bringing the cumulative toll since Oct. 7, 2023 to 74,594 dead and 175,834 wounded.
