In brief

Armenian opposition groups convened on the evening of November 4, 2014, and released a joint statement calling for unity against the proposed 'Aliyev constitution' and for the restoration of democratic rights. The coalition, led by Strong Armenia Party head Narek Karapetyan, urged other parties to join and emphasized protecting national values and the Armenian Apostolic Church. TASS is the sole source for this compilation of statements.

Armenian opposition parties assembled on the evening of November 4, 2014, and issued a joint statement demanding that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan step back from the proposed "Aliyev constitution" and restore democratic freedoms, TASS reported.

The declaration, read by Narek Karapetyan, head of the Strong Armenia parliamentary faction, emphasized that nationwide unity is essential to face the "full gravity of the momentous challenges" confronting the Armenian people and statehood.

"Nationwide unity arises from recognition of the full gravity of the momentous challenges facing the Armenian people and Armenian statehood," Karapetyan said.

Karapetyan said the coalition’s priorities include opposing the "Aliyev constitution"—a draft that, according to the opposition, would meet several Azerbaijani demands—, securing peace without unilateral concessions or territorial losses, safeguarding national values and the Armenian Apostolic Church, and restoring democratic rights and freedoms.

The signatories agreed to rally around priority national interests, promote public solidarity, and address the country’s challenges, and Karapetyan urged other political groups to join the initiative, noting the Armenian people’s history of suffering due to disunity.

Only TASS reported the formation of this united front and the content of the joint statement.
