MADISON, Wis. (FlashPoint) — Democrats are striving to expand liberal control in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court through an election this Tuesday, significantly centered around abortion rights, while also impacting legislative matters such as congressional redistricting and union rights.
This year's race diverges markedly from previous elections, where extensive campaigning and immense financial investments characterized the grind for control of the court. This time, the stakes appear less monumental as both parties gear up for challenges in the upcoming November elections.
Chris Taylor, a former state lawmaker and Planned Parenthood employee, representing the Democratic side in the court race, is up against Republican Maria Lazar, a state Appeals Court judge. Both candidates come from judicial backgrounds, yet their campaign strategies are distinctively polarized concerning abortion issues, with Taylor emphasizing reproductive rights as central to her campaign.
If Taylor succeeds, the liberal majority on the court will increase from 4-3 to 5-2, ensuring liberal influence through at least 2030. This follows a shift in 2023 when liberals regained the Supreme Court after 15 years of conservative dominance, attempting to rectify numerous laws enacted that aligned Wisconsin with conservative movements in the past decade.
Over the campaign, the candidates have engaged in heated debates surrounding each other’s alleged partisanship; Taylor has accused Lazar of promoting a right-wing agenda, while Lazar has attempted to label Taylor as a partisan politician. Fundraising disparities have also defined their campaigns, with Taylor reportedly outmatching Lazar in ad spending significantly.
The court's recent decisions, including the overturning of an abortion ban and calls for new legislative maps, amplify the importance of this election. Notably, Taylor previously served in Madison’s Assembly, aligning her closely with the progressive electorate, while Lazar represented a more conservative legal perspective during her previous tenure in the state Justice Department.
This pivotal election could shape Wisconsin’s legislative landscape, especially as another conservative justice is set to retire, potentially shifting the court's balance even further in favor of liberal ideologies in the near future.
