RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia’s traditional inauguration attire saw a notable change as Abigail Spanberger, the state’s first female governor, opted for a striking white outfit on Saturday. Traditionally, men wear morning coats while women are expected to don dark suits during the ceremony. Spanberger's choice symbolizes the struggle of the women’s suffrage movement that eventually secured voting rights for women in America.
Accompanied by her husband, who adhered to the tradition, Spanberger’s ensemble featured a long white coat adorned with gold buttons and white gloves, reflecting her recognition of the suffragists’ legacy. In her address during the ceremony, she acknowledged the hard work of past generations that fought to ensure women could participate in elections.
“I maintain an abiding sense of gratitude to those who work, generation after generation, to ensure women could be among those casting ballots, but who could only dream of a day like today,” Spanberger expressed, highlighting the significance of the moment as she steps into her new role.
