A former deputy governor of Virginia, Justin Fairfax, and his wife were found dead in their Annandale home on Thursday morning, in what authorities have characterized as a murder-suicide.

Investigators revealed that Fairfax shot his wife, Cerina, multiple times before turning the gun on himself. Both of their teenage children were at home during this horrific incident.

Fairfax, who served as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022, was the second black individual elected to a statewide office in Virginia. His time in office was marred by allegations of sexual assault, which he denied.

The local police chief, Kevin Davis, stated that the murder-suicide appeared to stem from ongoing marital conflicts, suggesting a 'complicated or messy divorce.' On the early morning of the incident, Fairfax County authorities received an emergency call from the couple's son, who indicated that he thought his mother had been stabbed.

Upon arrival, investigators discovered bullet casings near Cerina's body and noted that there was no prolonged confrontation prior to the shooting. Everything seems to have occurred at once, Davis remarked, indicating the spontaneity of the event.

Although the couple were living together, they had separated, leading to significant distress within their family. This is certainly a fall from grace for a relatively high-profile family that seemingly had a lot going for them, Davis expressed, highlighting the tragedy of the incident particularly for the children who lost both parents.

Political leaders, including former Governor Ralph Northam, expressed their shock and condolences, noting the devastating impact on the family and community.

Fairfax had previously sought the governor's office in 2021 but lost in the primary election.
