Annie Ramos, the newlywed wife of a US soldier, has been released from detention after being taken by immigration agents at the military base where her husband is stationed. Ramos, who came to the United States as a toddler from Honduras, was apprehended while attempting to obtain a military ID and activate benefits after marrying Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank.
Ramos was arrested on April 2nd and spent five days in a detention center, during which time the couple's plans to start their life together were abruptly halted. Blank described the experience of having his wife taken away as deeply distressing, stating, What was supposed to be the happiest week of our lives has turned into one of the hardest. Following intervention from Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, her release was secured.
Staff Sergeant Blank expressed overwhelming relief after her release, noting, 'I can't wait to carry my wife into our home and start our lives together.' He highlighted the challenges faced by military families within the immigration system, which has tightened under recent administrations.
Ramos, now focused on securing her legal status, emphasized her desire to continue her education in biochemistry and contribute positively to her community, reaffirming her commitment to living with dignity in the country she has called home since childhood.
