Former President Donald Trump announced that the United States will inflict “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” on any country that helps or does business with Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote in all capital letters, “I am launching the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country!” He added that nations providing any form of lifeline—companies, airports, or government entities—would face severe repercussions, though he did not name specific countries or sanctions.
The comment follows the expiration of a 60‑day cease‑fire with Iran and aligns with the U.S. “Operation Economic Fury,” which launched earlier this year to target foreign banks and firms that do business with Tehran.
Trump warned that “oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies—all need to stop now.” The president’s remarks came just after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pledged an unprecedented level of economic isolation for Iran, but no concrete details have yet been released.
The White House and Treasury have been asked by the BBC for comments, and observers are watching for a possible delay: the U.S. is expected to finalize sanctions plans in the coming weeks.
