A seven-month-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in her pushchair in 'broad daylight' in Brooklyn, New York City, police have reported. The infant is believed to have been the unintended victim of a gang-related shooting.

Footage from the scene captured two men riding against traffic when one man, seated on the back of a motorbike, brandished a gun and fired 'at least two rounds,' according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a press conference.

Following the shooting, the motorcycle crashed, leading to the capture of the suspected shooter, while a 'massive' manhunt for the driver continues.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed deep condolences, stating, 'A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,' and highlighted the ongoing struggle to combat gun violence in the city.

At the time of the incident, several adults and children were present on the street corner where the shooting occurred. The girl's parents sought refuge in a nearby corner shop, only to realize their child had been shot. Witness Bernius Maldonado recounted the horror, explaining how children nearby ducked for cover as the family rushed to the store.

Emergency services responded quickly, but the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Woodhull Hospital. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported during the incident.

Jessica Tisch voiced her sympathy as a mother, stating that the loss is 'unspeakable.' Police have gathered evidence suggesting that the suspects crashed their bike shortly after fleeing the scene, and one of the individuals is in custody for an unrelated matter, with police working to link him to the shooting.

The city remains on high alert as authorities address this devastating incident and the broader issue of gun violence affecting communities across New York.
