Twelve miners have been killed by a Russian drone strike in eastern Ukraine, the country's largest private energy firm has reported. According to DTEK, a bus carrying workers was attacked in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region as they returned from their shifts on Sunday. At least 15 other individuals were wounded in the strike, according to local emergency services.
The deadly attack comes amid reports of ongoing assaults on Ukrainian territory, including other strikes that claimed the lives of at least two more individuals and injured several others, notably in the city of Zaporizhzhia where a drone struck a maternity hospital.
These strikes are particularly shocking given the recent understanding that Russia would not target population centers or energy infrastructure during the cold snap hitting the region.
Zaporizhzhia's regional head Ivan Fedorov condemned the bombing of the maternity hospital, reiterating sentiments that underscore an ongoing war against civilians and non-combatants.
In total, the violence in eastern Ukraine persists, with various regions experiencing continued strikes. Ukrainian officials highlighted that these attacks contradict peace efforts, raising significant concern regarding future negotiations and the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Focused discussion on peace, mediated by the United States, continues, yet the violence underscores the grim reality on the ground and the challenges facing civilians amidst this prolonged conflict.
