Tiger Woods charged with driving under the influence after a car crash in Florida, police say.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office reported that the 15-time major golf champion has also been charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Sheriff John Budensiek announced Woods, 50, was involved in an accident where he rolled his Land Rover after colliding with a pressure cleaner truck on Jupiter Island last Friday.
The incident left Woods crawling out from the passenger side of his vehicle. Although he passed a breathalyzer test at the scene, he declined to provide a urine sample.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported from the collision, which occurred on Beach Road shortly after 14:00 local time.
Sheriff Budensiek stated, The DUI investigators came to the scene, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. He mentioned Woods explained his past injuries and surgeries, which were considered during the in-depth roadside tests conducted by authorities.
Following these evaluations, Woods was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County jail. Budensiek clarified that initial suspicions about alcohol being involved were unfounded as Woods's breathalyzer results came back with triple zeros. However, the refusal for a urine test means definitive results regarding potential impairment at the time of the crash won't be available.
The sheriff noted that Woods was cooperative but cautious, stating, He has a right to refuse that test... there is a statute under which he will be charged for declining the test, but we may never know what he was impaired on at the time of the crash.
In reaction to the incident, former US President Donald Trump expressed his concern, saying, I feel so badly. [Woods has] got some difficulty. There was an accident; that’s all I know. He’s a very close friend of mine, an amazing person, an amazing man.
Woods will remain in jail for eight hours before being released on bond, and the BBC has reached out to his representatives for additional comments.
