Molecule, a pill promising rapid weight loss, went viral on Russian TikTok earlier this year.

As feeds became flooded with captions like Take Molecule and forget food exists, many young individuals began to document their weight-loss journeys through social media.

However, the reality behind this pill is troubling. Maria, a 22-year-old from St. Petersburg, took two pills daily and soon experienced severe side effects such as a dried mouth, loss of appetite, anxiety, and troubling psychological effects.

Unfortunately, Maria is not alone. Numerous TikTok users have reported effects including dilated pupils and insomnia. Shockingly, at least three children have been hospitalized after using the drug.

These pills are marketed with phrases implying natural components, but they contain a banned substance called sibutramine. This substance, initially used as an antidepressant, has been linked to increased risks of heart attack and stroke.

Despite being outlawed in places like the UK, EU, and the US, Molecule remains available in Russia, often sold without restrictions online. The price is attractive, costing around £6-7 ($8-9) for a supply, making it a tempting option compared to regulated weight-loss options.

Health professionals are warning against self-administration of such drugs, especially for young individuals or those with existing eating disorders. Maria now actively discourages others from trying the drug and reached out to the parents of a young girl contemplating its use.

Despite ongoing efforts by authorities to regulate the sale of Molecule, the drug continues to circulate online, underscoring the urgent need for increased awareness and regulation around such dangerous products.
