Tanzanian Music Star Matonya Arrested on Rape Charges in Kenya
The popular Tanzanian musician Sefu Shabani, commonly known as Matonya, has been arrested and charged with rape in Kenya.
Matonya, 43, appeared in a Mombasa court where he denied the charge, according to a statement from Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Following the court's proceedings, Matonya was granted bail amounting to 500,000 Kenyan shillings (approximately $3,900 or £2,900) and was ordered to surrender his Tanzanian passport.
Well-known for his bongo flava tracks, Matonya rose to fame around 15 years ago and continues to perform his hits across East Africa. His notable songs include Vaileti, Anita, and Taxi Bubu.
The prosecution has stated that the alleged incident occurred at an apartment located in Nyali, a beachfront area in Mombasa, on Tuesday. The DPP emphasized the importance of Matonya remaining within the court's jurisdiction and has instructed immigration authorities to monitor border points.
The case has yet to elicit a response from Tanzanian authorities but has ignited discussions on social media and within the music industry. Some supporters demand due process for Matonya, while others highlight the gravity of the allegations and the necessity for justice.
