Medal Misprint Exposes Sydney Marathon Branding Blunder
One week out from the world‑renowned Sydney Marathon, organisers face questions over the medal’s design. The previewed medal features a stadium carving resembling Munich’s Allianz Arena, rather than Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
The 42.2km event will see about 40,000 runners on 30 August, after over 120,000 ballot entries.
Organisers unveiled the medal on social media, inviting participants to “look closely” for the course’s landmarks, featuring the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finishing at the Opera House.
The back of the medal mistakenly displays Munich’s stadium, adding confusion to the Sydney-centric imagery. This mirrors a similar error at last year’s Great North Run, where medals showed an unrelated city and river.
The medal’s front contains a gold and indigo pattern by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, with 42 half‑round markings representing each kilometre. Killian stated he was not responsible for the back artwork.
