Sydney Marathon Medal Mix‑Up: German Stadium Goes on Finishers' Trophy

The organisers of this year’s Sydney Marathon reacted with humor after a mistake saw Munich’s Allianz Arena etched on the finishers’ medals instead of the local Allianz Stadium.

When the official social media feed shared the medal design, an international error went viral: the silver, double‑sided medal features Sydney icons such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge on one side, while the opposite side displays a silver‑gold pattern by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian. However, the back-side engraving mistakenly bore the hollow, diamond‑cushioned outline of the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Organisers admitted the mistake as “an unfortunate error” and jokingly said they were “not going to run from it”. They stressed that the medals still looked beautiful and were now a little more unique, turning the incident into good‑natured conversation at the event.

The error provoked playful responses from German social media – a caption read, “Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!”. Links between the two Allianz venues and a note that the Sydney stadium has a flatter façade smoothed with bronze fins contrasted the puckered Munich arena, providing context for the confusion.
