50‑Plus‑Year‑Old Scootie Conquers 2,800‑Mile Australian Coast
Bob Brown, a 57‑year‑old resident of Saltash, Cornwall, has finished a coast‑to‑coast endeavour that took him 31 days, 4 hours and 10 minutes to cover roughly 2,800 miles (4,506 km) from Perth to Sydney on a non‑electric kick scooter.
He set out in July with two goals: to break the Guinness World Record for fastest cross‑country scooter journey, and to be the first person to travel the route by three different means – running, cycling and scootering. In 2001 Brown first ran the route in 60 days, and in 2003 became the first Brit to both run and cycle across Australia.

During the journey Brown suffered a wing‑mirror collision on day five that sent him skidding onto the hard shoulder, and on the final day a broken handlebar while descending a steep hill. Despite these setbacks, he completed the route with barely a day left and will now submit his case to Guinness for confirmation.
Beyond the adventure, Brown pledged to raise £5,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support, St Luke’s Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West. “I want to encourage young people to get off their screens and seek out adventure,” he said.
The story, originally reported by BBC Cornwall’s Cameron Weldon, demonstrates that age is no barrier to daring feats and that a simple scooter can traverse a continent with determination and heart.
