FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The FBI reported on Wednesday that a suspicious package located at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa earlier this week contained possible energetic materials. The specific nature of the material remains undetermined as officials continue their investigation.
According to a statement from the FBI Tampa office, while an analysis of the materials found has not been finalized, the base increased its security measures significantly in light of the find and a third-party threat received.
Energetic materials are substances that can release large amounts of energy and may consist of explosives or propellants. The package was retrieved on Monday outside the Visitor Center at MacDill Air Force Base.
In response to the threat, the base instituted a brief shelter-in-place order, which lasted around two hours before being lifted. MacDill officials stated that they prioritize safety and will not disclose specific security measures being taken, but assured the public that all threats are taken seriously.
As of Tuesday, the base was operating under a Force Protection Charlie status—signifying a high level of security with proactive measures against potential threats.
Personnel on base have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately to security forces. MacDill is a strategic military location responsible for operations in a significant portion of the Middle East and has recently been on high alert due to escalating tensions in the region.
