Six people have been arrested following clashes between police and protesters in Milan, which is one of the host cities for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Thousands of individuals took to the streets protesting various issues including the rising cost of living. The situation escalated when some protesters fired flares and threw stones, prompting the police to respond with water cannons.

These protests come on the heels of increased tensions due to government measures tightening protest laws after violent demonstrations last weekend in Turin resulted in injuries for more than 100 police officers.

In a related matter, authorities are currently investigating suspected sabotage on northern Italy's railway network as unrest continues. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini condemned the confrontation in Milan, labeling the participants as 'criminals' and expressing pride in the government's new security measures aimed at preventing such disturbances.

While the majority of protesters demonstrated peacefully, some voiced concerns about the environmental and social sustainability of the Olympic Games. Protest organizer Alberto di Monte mentioned that the games are no longer sustainable, criticizing the excessive spending on infrastructure over environmental protection.

The ongoing Winter Olympics are set to run until February 22, across various locations such as Milan and the Dolomites.
