Patrick Herminie, the main opposition leader in Seychelles, has decisively won the presidential elections, defeating the incumbent, Wavel Ramkalawan, in a runoff vote. The electoral commission reported Herminie received 52.7% of the votes compared to Ramkalawan's 47.3%.
In his victory speech, Herminie made a series of promises, including efforts to lower the cost of living, revive public services, and unite the island nation. He emphasized that this election result marks a new chapter for all Seychellois.
Ramkalawan, who previously served as president, congratulated Herminie and reflected on his term, stating he leaves behind a legacy that makes many presidents blush.
The recent elections required a runoff after neither candidate achieved an outright majority in the initial round of voting held two weeks prior. Prior to his electoral run, Herminie faced politically motivated charges of witchcraft, which were eventually dropped, allowing him to compete.
In his speech, Herminie reaffirmed his commitment to be a leader for all Seychellois and expressed his intention to create opportunities for everyone, thereby healing divisions across the nation.
His party, United Seychelles, also regained a substantial majority in the parliamentary elections last month, marking a significant shift in Seychelles' political landscape following Ramkalawan's government.
