Oslo’s mayor, Anne Lindboe, called off her wedding ceremony with fiancé Pål Sandvid after the sudden death of Norway’s King Harald V. The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, was postponed as the city and the country mourned the loss of a 35‑year‑old monarch who passed away early on the same day at the national hospital in Oslo. In an Instagram tribute, Lindboe wrote, "It’s hard to imagine an Oslo and a Norway without you. You didn’t need a crowd to be king," highlighting the king’s role as a unifying figure.
King Harald’s passing has led to the immediate ascension of his son, Haakon VIII, who became Norway’s new monarch on Friday. There is currently no new date set for the mayor’s wedding, according to her political adviser.
The late king was celebrated for modernising the Norwegian monarchy and broke tradition by marrying a commoner, Queen Sonja. He served as a symbol of unity during challenging times for the nation. Public memorials are underway, with citizens gathering to lay flowers outside the Royal Palace and leaders, including Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Britain’s King Charles III, expressing grief and gratitude for King Harald’s service.
