OpenAI has shut down its artificial intelligence (AI) video-generation app Sora less than two years after its launch made headlines for creating realistic clips based on simple prompts.

Along with ending Sora, OpenAI will wind down its content partnership with entertainment giant Disney, as per reports.

OpenAI stated that it has discontinued Sora to concentrate on other developments, particularly in robotics that could help people solve real-world physical tasks.

A spokesperson for Disney commented, stating, we respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere.

Disney plans to engage with other AI platforms to explore responsible uses of AI technology while safeguarding intellectual property rights.

OpenAI clarified that the closure of Sora applies to both the consumer app and the professional internet-based platform, signaling a halt in their focus on developing video-generation tools.

The company aims to create advanced AI applications, including agentic technology that can autonomously complete tasks without significant human oversight.

OpenAI intends to leverage the technology used in video generation for robotic training in future applications.

However, image-making tools integrated into ChatGPT will remain unaffected by Sora's termination.

Sora was initially launched in 2024 to widespread attention due to its ability to generate high-quality AI videos, often indistinguishable from those produced by professional studios.

The app faced mounting competition in the AI video-making domain, including notable players like China's Seedance, which stirred controversy with its generated videos featuring iconic Hollywood characters.

Concerns over copyright violations and the media industry's viability with AI innovations have consistently surrounded Sora, especially after Disney licensed its characters for use in the app, marking a significant moment in AI and entertainment collaboration.
