In a significant shift towards enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Meta has revealed plans to monitor employee activity on company computers. This new initiative, termed the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), will track keystrokes and mouse clicks to generate data used for training AI models.

During an internal communication sent to employees, Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, explained that this monitoring is essential for crafting AI tools that enhance workplace productivity. A company spokesperson stated, If we're building agents to help people complete everyday tasks using computers, our models need real examples of how people actually use them. Furthermore, the company assured that the gathered data would be used solely for this purpose and safeguards would be in place to protect sensitive information.

However, reactions among staff have been mixed. One Meta employee expressed feelings of discomfort, labeling the initiative as very dystopian, particularly in light of recent job cuts at the company. Over the past year, Meta has laid off approximately 2,000 employees, with expectations of further reductions looming as the company reportedly removes job listings from its internal hiring site.

Critics within and outside the organization have described the tracking tool as a troubling example of the company's fixation on AI. Former employees have commented on the pervasive nature of AI initiatives at Meta, raising questions about the implications for job security and workplace privacy.

To emphasize its commitment to AI, Meta plans to invest around $140 billion in AI technology by 2026, which is nearly double what the company invested in the previous year. This investment will fund the development of new AI models from its reformulated Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has voiced his optimism regarding AI, claiming that advancements in the technology could significantly reshape work processes. He predicts a future where tasks that once required large teams may soon be accomplished by a single skilled individual. As Meta pushes ahead with its AI agenda, the atmosphere within the company remains tense, marked by concerns over job security and employee privacy.
