In brief

In an unprecedented venture, Katy Perry is gearing up for a spring launch into space as part of an all-women crew aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket. The "Firework" singer will fly alongside notable figures such as Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos's fiancée, CBS presenter Gayle King, revered former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. This milestone mission marks the first all-women space flight since Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova's solo journey in 1963. While Blue Origin has not yet disclosed an exact launch date, it's anticipated to occur in spring before Perry embarks on her extensive Lifetimes Tour, running from April 23 to November 11.

Expressing her excitement, Perry reflected, “If you had told me I’d be part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child.” The upcoming NS-31 mission will signify the 11th human launch for the New Shepard rocket and the 31st in its operational history, having previously sent 52 individuals to the stars. Passengers can expect a thrilling ride lasting around 11 minutes, reaching the Karman line, which marks the official boundary of space. Blue Origin has credited Lauren Sanchez for her pivotal role in orchestrating this groundbreaking mission, with Sanchez articulating her aspiration to pave the way for women's representation in space exploration. The initiative represents a noteworthy addition to the growing roster of celebrity space travelers, including Bezos himself, who flew during the company’s inaugural manned mission in 2021. Other notable figures, such as Michael Strahan and William Shatner, have also enjoyed voyages aboard Bezos's rockets, marking the burgeoning era of space tourism. As the countdown to this momentous event begins, the mission is poised not only to challenge perceptions of Earth but also to inspire future generations, reinforcing that space is accessible to everyone, regardless of background.
