In brief

The case raises questions about intentions, including potential sales or keeping them as pets.

Three individuals were apprehended in Japan after they attempted to smuggle hermit crabs out of the country. The suspects, identified as Chinese nationals aged 24, 26, and 27, were arrested on Amami Island, where these crustaceans are legally protected. The local police were tipped off when hotel staff, tasked with looking after the men's luggage, noticed unusual "rustling noises" coming from the suitcases. Upon investigation, officers uncovered thousands of hermit crabs weighing around 95 kilograms. A third individual was discovered with an additional 65 kilograms of crabs in another set of suitcases.Authorities are currently probing the case further to determine the men's motivations for holding such a large quantity of the crabs. Police stated, "Our investigation is ongoing to identify whether they had [the crabs] to sell them, or to keep them as pets, or to eat them," revealing many avenues are still to be explored. Hermit crabs are considered a part of the national treasure and significant to Amami Island's biodiversity. These creatures, known for scavenging shells for their homes, are commonly viewed on the island's scenic beaches. According to the Japan Times, the market value of these crabs may reach up to ¥20,000 (approximately £103).
