COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A man convicted of battering two people at a turbulent legislative town hall was found not guilty on charges related to the removal of a woman who was seen being dragged out in a viral video.
The Kootenai County jury returned a split verdict against Paul Trouette, convicting him of violating security guard uniform regulations as well as two counts of misdemeanor battery against individuals who objected to the forceful removal of the woman, Teresa Borrenpohl. He was acquitted of four other charges, including battery and false imprisonment, as reported by the Coeur d’Alene Press.
The chaotic incident at the February meeting featured Borrenpohl, a Democratic candidate, being forcibly removed after heckling. Footage showed Sheriff Bob Norris telling her to leave and backing away to record the scene while security personnel dragged her from the audience. The guards from LEAR Asset Management, who were not in identifiable uniforms, faced backlash for their actions.
The Idaho Attorney General's office declined to press charges against Sheriff Norris, while misdemeanor charges were filed against Trouette, who owns the security firm. Charges against the other guards were dropped. The jury deliberated for nearly eight hours after a three-day trial.
City's chief deputy prosecutor Ryan Hunter stated, Justice was done, while Trouette chose not to comment on the verdict. The event drew a significant crowd, revealing the divided political sentiment in this largely Republican area.
During the trial, defense attorneys argued that Trouette acted under the sheriff's direction, whereas prosecutors countered that no specific orders were given to remove or detain attendees. Borrenpohl testified about the physical pain inflicted on her during the incident, explaining how her airway was compromised as the guards restrained her.
Borrenpohl has since filed a tort claim against Kootenai County, alleging violations of her constitutional rights, with pending action expected from county officials.
