A mass shooting at the Or Tor Kor Market in Bangkok resulted in five fatalities on Monday, with the assailant taking his own life afterward, according to police reports. The deceased include four security personnel and one market employee, while two other vendors sustained injuries during the attack.
Police Lieutenant Siam Boonsom revealed that the perpetrator was Thai and had prior conflicts with the market's security team. He clarified to local media that the tragic incident had no ties to Thailand's ongoing territorial disputes with Cambodia. The Or Tor Kor Market, known for its fresh produce and seafood, has been shaken by this unexpected violence.
Although Thailand has relatively high rates of gun ownership compared to its regional counterparts, mass shootings are rare. However, the nation has witnessed several tragic incidents in recent years. Notably, in 2023, a 14-year-old perpetrated a shooting at a luxury shopping center in Bangkok, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries. In October 2022, a former police officer was responsible for a chilling attack at a childcare center in Nong Bua Lamphu province, where he killed 37 individuals, mostly children. Additionally, in 2020, a soldier's rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima left 29 dead and many more injured, raising concerns over gun violence in the country.
