In brief

The U.S. military has removed Colonel Susannah Meyers from her command at the Pituffik base in Greenland, citing non-adherence to President Trump’s agenda, following objections to Vice President Vance's controversial remarks.

April 11, 2025 – The U.S. military has recently made headlines by announcing the removal of Colonel Susannah Meyers from her command at the Pituffik base in Greenland. The Space Force's decision emphasizes that any actions undermining President Trump's agenda will not be tolerated. The announcement, shared widely on social media by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, did not provide concrete reasons for Colonel Meyers' dismissal. However, he stressed the importance of maintaining a unified command aligned with the administration's policies. Reports from Military.com indicated that Meyers had sent an email to staff members expressing her dissent regarding Vice President JD Vance’s visit to the base on March 28. During his visit, Vance criticized Denmark for inadequate spending on security, a statement that sparked a diplomatic response from the Danish government. In her March 31 email, Meyers conveyed that Vance’s positions did not represent the views of the Pituffik leadership. This step towards establishing a nonpartisan stance in military operations appears to have been a critical factor in her removal. The Space Force reiterated that commanders must adhere to high standards of conduct and remain nonpartisan while executing their roles. The pituffik base is a notable site with personnel from the U.S. military, as well as civilian contractors from Greenland, Denmark, and Canada. Colonels like Meyers play vital roles in overseeing operations and managing a diverse team in this strategic location. Meyers had been in command of the 821st Space Base Group, which manages the base since last July.
